How to install Xcode 6 or 7 on an external drive?

My SSD has a capacity of only 60 GB, and at the moment I have just over 5 GB of free space. Is there a way to install Xcode directly to an external drive? Or for this I had to first make this disk bootable and boot my system?

There are several options you can consider.

Move some files to an external drive instead of installing applications on it. This will be your best bet as applications have dependencies. Also, if you run them from your SSD, they will get better performance.
