When opening an oracle connection, the connection object is null

I am trying to connect to the oracle database in my controller:

Something else is happening here. Although I am glad that the suggestions for the try / catch block helped you solve the problem, they should not have been required with the simplified bock code - the ora exception should have been selected instead of the null-reference exception.
