How to enable resources and add-on packages?

When creating the plone 5 add-on, how do we now add our own resources to the registry? (like our own css and js for outgoing packages?)

I read http://docs.plone.org/adapt-and-extend/theming/resourceregistry.html and this is not useful ...

Can someone point me to a working example of a collective addon or some better addon documentation?

The vangheem example.plone5resource in the github team has examples of several strategies. The examples vary depending on the extent to which you need requirejs to handle the dependencies and whether you need resources compiled by the package manager. Heritage packages are the easiest if you upgrade to Plone 3 or 4.
