What is the purpose of the source maps?

Can someone explain what source maps are? Because, as I see it, my concatenated and thumbnail file is loading (we are talking about JavaScript), as well as more than 100 modules. How does this not affect download performance twice as much as before?

Since you load the source map only when you open the debugger.

Actual users who do not open the debugger still benefit from minimization.
