What is the difference and relationship between "xx-softmmu" and "xx-linux-user"?

Question

When build qemufrom source, I find for each architecture CPU, there are 2 options for the target list: xx-softmmuand xx-linux-user. For example:

x86_64-softmmu
x86_64-linux-user

I can not find the difference between the two parameters. Can anyone imagine what the difference and the relationship between them is?
