CORS Error in Google Maps Geocoding API

I ran into a rather unexpected Google Maps geocoding issue. Everything was fine until yesterday, but since then I get a CORS error for any request made in their geocoding API.

Error message:

XMLHttpRequest cannot load https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/geocode/json?latlng=18.92187618976372,72.82581567764282&key=<API_KEY>. A wildcard '*' cannot be used in the 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header when the credentials flag is true. Origin 'http://domain' is therefore not allowed access.

My system was configured so that my front-end is served from a cross-domain from my logical server. To do this, I set the flag withCredentialsas true. Since the Maps API uses a wildcard *, it withCredentialsthrows an error.

To solve this problem, I used a separate XHR method for calls to Maps, where the flag was set to false.
