How to set Unicode character as icon text in browser action in Chrome extension?

I just started developing the Chrome extension, and I'm almost ready, except for this little problem.

I want to set the Unicode character as the icon text in the browser action, but what I have tried so far does NOT work .

  • Unicode Character - 💩 (also known as 'poop')
  • Its Unicode is U + 1F4A9 (from here )

What I have tried so far:

chrome.browserAction.setBadgeText({text: '💩'});   //shows '💩'
chrome.browserAction.setBadgeText({text: 'U+1F4A9;'});    //shows 'Ú+1F4A9;'

What should I do to show 💩?
