Attempting to make a material creation application that is compatible with older versions of Android as well ... A new empty project was created, a dependency was added compile 'com.android.support:appcompat-v7:21.0.3'to the gradle file.
Still no luck: /

This was in older versions of Android Sudio. In Android Studio 1.0, you have to create it yourself. Check the SDK version on Android 5.0 (Api 21). And you will be fine.
