How to use mirrorOf in Maven

What is the difference between using

<mirrorOf>central</mirrorOf>

and

   <mirrorOf>*</mirrorOf>

We have a Nexus server, whose proxy server is connected to the Maven public repository, and with the help of "*" instead of the "central" one downloads some files, but not all.

Reading http://maven.apache.org/guides/mini/guide-mirror-settings.html doesn’t suggest what might cause this?

<mirrorOf>central</mirrorOf>

says that if the request is sent to search for the maven central repository in the mirror instead

Where

<mirrorOf>*</mirrorOf>

says for any download request from any repository in this mirror repository
