I think the main argument against the first version is that it is a much less common idiom.
Remembering that the code is read more often than it is written, it makes no sense to use the less familiar form of the for loop if there is no particular advantage for this. Everything that he achieves distracts anyone who works on code in the future.
So, first of all, for the purpose of maintaining the code (by others, as well as for the source code), I would prefer a more general second format.
