Example tmux "refresh-client" usage?

From the man page ( http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/precise/en/man1/tmux.1.html ):

refresh-client [-S] [-t target-client] (alias: update) Update the current client associated with the key, or one client if specified with -t. If -S is specified, refresh the client status bar.

What does it mean that the client is bound to a key? I am trying to think when I can really use this.

This is by default tied to the "r" in tmux, and I'm thinking of overriding it. Can someone explain a usage example for refusing to upgrade a client? Thank.
