Neo4j "empty" database takes up a lot of disk space

I inserted ~ 2M nodes (via the Java API) and deleted them after a day or two of use (via java too). Now my db has 16k nodes and weighs 6 GB .

Why was this space not freed?

What could be the reason?

The catalog data/graph.dbcontains several items:

  • Save yourself, split into several files
