What is the difference between starting a standalone selenium server and setting up a hub / node

I started by installing a standalone selnium server

java -jar selenium-server-standalone-2.32.0.jar

This allowed me to successfully connect and run my tests while running multiple browsers at the same time.

What is the difference when I use the following setting as a hub ...

java -jar selenium-server-standalone-2.42.2.jar -role hub

and attached node ...

java -jar .\selenium-server-standalone-2.42.2.jar -role node -hub http://localhost:4444/grid/register

which also seemed the same.

Is configuring a / node hub my best option solely for configuration flexibility?
