How to prevent Wordpress from removing HTML tags in excerpts

I use wp_trim_words to crop some passages on my home page. It works great, except that it removes HTML tags from excerpts. I need to make some excerpt fragments in bold (using <strong>). Following the instructions here , I tried to remove the wp_trim_words function and replace it with a new one using the following code, which replaces $text = wp_strip_all_tags( $text );the original WP function with $text = strip_tags($text, '<strong>',);. But it breaks the site. What am I doing wrong?
