What happens to guest virtual machines if the host running Vagrant is down?

Imaging I am running a Vagrant-managed virtual machine (VM) guest machine and hosted by VirtualBox on Windows. What happens if the HOST shuts down suddenly? Are there any data that has been added / updated for the VM? If so, should I run vagrant haltto ensure that nothing is lost? Perhaps vagrant suspendit would be enough?

Thank you for any ideas or recommendations.
