Custom keyboard in iOS 8

iOS 8 allows us to create our own custom keyboards. Is it possible to make user output on the keyboard for anything other than unaccepted NSStrings?

Is it possible to make a keyboard that displays images to say the Messages application, or is it impossible?

No, that would be too complicated, since most UITextField/ UITextViewcan only process an object NSString.

As described in UITextDocumentProxy, only allowed NSStrings.
