Really the choice in HTML tags in Vim

The HTML document says that I have this:

<p>
  fdhjfkdj hfkjdfhkjdfhkjdh dfhdkf kjdh kjdhkjdhk
  fhkdj hdjfhjkdh kjdh kjdf jkdhf d
  jfdfhkdjfhkjdf
  fjdj fhkd fdhfkjd hfkjdfhkjdf kdhfd
  fdhjkfjk dhjdfhkjdf kjdfhdk fhdk
</p>

If I make a normal command vitin vim, it will select the text inside if I can withstand it, but if I try to do something like a tab or run gq, it will affect the whole <p>. For example, execution vitthen gqends up looking like

    <p> fdhjfkdj hfkjdfhkjdfhkjdh dfhdkf kjdh kjdhkjdhk lkd sldj lks jlkdf
jlsdkf jlsdf jdl dlsjl fhkdj hdjfhjkdh kjdh kjdf jkdhf d jfdfhkdjfhkjdf fjdj
fhkd fdhfkjd hfkjdfhkjdf kdhfd fdhjkfjk dhjdfhkjdf kjdfhdk fhdk </p>

Indents from it will not recede from the text, but the entire tag. How do I really select the text inside so that I can run commands on it like the ones above?
