Street Outer Table Adds New Column

Question

I see options that allow you to add new columns in Hive [ source ]

However, I have an EXTERNAL table that maps to HBase with SERDEPROPERTIES, TBLPROPERTIES and STORED BY 'org.apache.hadoop.hive.hbase.HBaseStorageHandler'.

Is it possible to add / change columns after an external table with HBase setting?

Am I only SERDEPROPERTIES for new columns or do we need to redo the whole table?

When you try to use, ALTER TABLE xx ADD COLUMS( xx string);you will receive the following error.

SemanticException [Error 10134]: ALTER TABLE cannot be used for a non-native table hbase_cdr2
