Preview the camera to half the screen

I am trying to get a half-screen camera preview similar to the screen attached to the screen.

I tried almost all the camera preview examples, also tried it myself, but it either got SurfaceView to resize the preview (so there will never be half the screen size), or it really fits half the screen, but the preview is stretched.
