Scale WordPress with Google App Engine and Google Cloud SQL

We need to use WordPress for a site that will have high traffic. We expect an initial load of views of 500 thousand pages per month and increase to approximately 8 million page views per month. Usage will be mainly during business hours, which is about 20 days per month for 8 hours.

We are thinking about using the Google App Engine with Google Cloud SQL. We were wondering how well it scales for such a load. The theory says the Google App Engine should scale automatically, but not sure how good Google Cloud SQL is at scaling. This will be a read database that writes a few.

So the questions are:

  • Does anyone have experience deploying WordPress on a high load Google App Engine + Google Cloud SQL?
  • Do you know if there are problems installing WordPress plugins in the Google App Engine? Do you need any special changes?
