Loading new media when the application is in the background

Question

Can I use the new media while the application is running in the background? (Like loading the next track when playing a playlist)

I understand that in iOS it GCKCastSocketcloses when the application is in the background (even when running in the background). Is there any way around this behavior? Saving an open socket will also allow for real-time screen lock updates, as described in the project's checklist.
