Unable to change site visibility in Wordpress

I have a strange problem with the Wordpress site I'm working on. I can’t turn off the checkbox that says “Refuse search engines from indexing this site” (see screenshot, although it is in Dutch ..).

When I turn off the checkbox and save the settings, the page reload and the checkbox will be checked again. Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? And is there a way to manually turn on search engine visibility?

Thank!

This is an old question, but just in case, it will help someone:

If the site is hosted as an intermediate, you cannot uncheck the box (of course, depending on your hosting provider). For example, WPengine prevents unchecking the box when checked.

It is easy to forget when you are on deadline for a client site.

Just remember to uncheck the box when you click on production (made that mistake!).
