It's pretty clear that the correct way to associate a phone number with HTML is with a URI like tel:2065551212. However, many browsers also accept the URI of a slash phone, a la tel://2065551212, although this AFAICT is not permitted by the relevant RFC ( 3966 ),
So my question is: why do some people recommend using slashes? Is this just a bad habit from the http URI?
Or ... Were there actually some early mobile browsers that incorrectly recognized links tel:without a slash? I read at least one blogger, indicating that this is so, which is bad, but understand the excuse for this. Can someone provide an example where it tel://###will work, but tel:###will not?
