Use the following:

dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb

Note the "-" infront of parameter i.

I had this error even when using -i . Then I tried to use - install , and it worked.

sudo dpkg --install google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb

, dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb, -i .i

This error can occur when copying / pasting a command from online instructions, rather than entering it directly. Thus, instead of "-" you get "-" and you get an error.

Today I had the same problem when I read a tutorial on how to install chrome. The problem was that I was copying another character set from a textbook that caused confusion in the dash from the syntax.
