Is it possible to use a font as a div background image?

I would like to use fonts as icons for my buttons and divs, unfortunately, font rendering is not consistent across browsers, so it’s very important to achieve pixel size. I was wondering if it is possible to somehow assign the font as a div background image.

Any idea if this is possible?
