Failed to connect to gmail smtp server. What for?

Question

I am trying to connect to the gmail SMTP server using

telnet gmail.smtp.com 587

It connects when I try it from home. But, when I tried this from my office, it shows an error . What is the problem?

Here is the error I'm contacting with smtp.gmail.com:

Could not open connection to the host, on port 587: Connect Failed

Your hostname should be - smtp.gmail.com You wrote - gmail.smtp.com

Please change the name

Since you can connect at home, your office is probably blocking the port with a firewall. True, you could try a different network.
