How does the mozilla stub installer work?

I am currently working on an automatic deployment and automatic update mechanism for a Windows application. I tried the Microsoft ClickOnce strategy, but it did not work for me, because the strategy is suitable only for small applications, and my application selects ~ 500 MB.

I am wondering how the settings and updates for stub for Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome work, as well as Microsoft packages, including the .NET framework and VS installers. I came across Google Omaha , which hosts the mechanism for deploying product updates for Google, but for me it is not very convincing.

Can someone help me find out how stub based deployment design works?

PS Any open source code would be very useful for this .; -)
