Why does the perls length function return different results for a single input?

Why lengthdoes it return a different output for what looks like the same argument? (Perl!)

In fact, these are all different lines, all of which contain invisible characters. You can see this if you open the text in a hex editor:

Copy and paste this command into a text editor (in my case it is vim) you will find there many <200b> characters between "Perl" and "!".

It is called "ZERO WIDTH SPACE" and it is a UNICODE symbol. Unicode Character 'ZERO WIDTH SPACE'
