How does Gmail force itself to become an active tab when it loads?

Question

I have never seen another site do this, and this is an interesting behavior. To recreate it, open a new tab in Safari and go to mail.google.com. While he loads the switch to another tab and waits. As soon as Gmail finishes loading ajax, it fires what I suppose to be a javascript event to make it become an active tab.

Does anyone know what a javascript event is? Is this possible not javascript?
