Open the iOS Messages app and go directly to your Inbox / Messages list.

My goal is to view the messages in the SMS inbox.

I understand that it is not possible to access incoming SMS from another application, so I sent the route:

[[UIApplication sharedApplication] openURL:[NSURL URLWithString:@"sms:"]];

The problem with this is that it pulls out the New Message screen.

In any case, can I avoid this and go directly to the message list?

Unfortunately, there are only two URL schemes for messages,

  • "sms:" which opens the "New message" screen
  • "sms: 1-408-555-1212", which opens the "New message" screen with the provided number

As the Apple developer documentation says: https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/featuredarticles/iPhoneURLScheme_Reference/iPhoneURLScheme_Reference.pdf
