Sphinx Documentation: Continuing Numbering from Header to List

Question

I am looking for list numbers to continue from header numbers. I tried the directive :numbered: in .. toctree: but this only produces numbers for the headers.

For instance:

 Section ===== Sub Section ----------- #. item 1 #. item 2 #. item 3 

To generate:

1. Section

1.1 Sub Section

1.1.1 Item 1

1.1.2 Item 2

1.1.2.1 Item 3

What (if any) would be an approach to creating this result?
