ADT does not load target platforms, even if they are installed. How to fix?

Symptoms

I ran into this problem when I was creating a new Android application project in eclipse.

I was not allowed to go through the first screen of the new project wizard due to the fact that "The package name cannot begin or end with a period"

  • Application Name: Lahari
  • Project Name: Lahari App
  • Package Name: com.example.lahari
  • Minimum SDK Required: API8: Android 2.2 (Froyo)
  • Target SDK: API16: Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)
  • Compile with: (No choice)
  • topic: holo light

So, I started looking for hiking and tried a lot of solutions from SO and other sites.

One of the related problems (which I did not realize) was that the List of target platforms was empty, the last time I tried, it booted fine, but no more.

The SDK manager said the platforms are installed and updated. There were no updates for ADT, SDK Tools or Eclipse.

Problem:

In Eclipse Windows> Tools> Settings> Android, the path was set correctly, but no goals were loaded.

My system configuration:

  • Win 7 64 bit - all updates applied to date
  • Eclipse Juno SR1 (updated)
  • ADT 21.0.0

I have tried all solutions on the Internet. It took me a while to find a working solution.

So here is the solution:

DISABLE YOUR ANTI-VIRUS!

The antivirus that I use:

Kaspersky Internet Security 2013

This was the least expected of solutions, I know.

I realized this when I was about to reinstall the SDK.

Update . This solution did not work on another system. So thatโ€™s what worked.

1) In eclipse go to windows-> preferences-> startup and shutdown-> check Android ADT

2) Restart eclipse

I used to disable all things at startup and shutdown, as it used to make eclipse much faster. This has never created a problem before.

However, all is well again ^ _ ^

Enabling "windows-> preferences-> startup and shutdown-> android development toolkit" really helps.
