Installed VS2012 - now it is impossible to connect to the SQL server with SSMS

Question

Since installing VS 2012 and uninstalling VS 2010, I can no longer connect to our SQL Server using Management Studio 2012 (which has already been installed)

All I get is

The connection to the server was successfully established, but then an error occurred while establishing a connection with the preliminary connection. (privateider: SSL provider, error: 0 - wait timeout) (Microsoft SQL Server, error: 258)

I "restored" my instance of SQL Server 2012 tools, but still did not work. I can connect to local instances - unfortunately this is generally useless

Any ideas on this? I think that I will have to delete the lot and start all over again, and this is an unexpected surprise that I would rather not do

EDIT: ok, so compared to google, I uninstalled .net 4.5 (and installed .net 4.0) and magically connected SMSS, but of course VS2012 stopped working. so I installed VS2012 again, and few SMSS refuse to connect again. what freakkin gives?

You must install SQL Server 2012 first before installing VS 2012.

Removing VS 2010 will also break the VS 2010 environment that is included with SQL Server 2010.

In my situation, I had a filter / proxy content called Covenant Eyes, which was the probable cause.

I tried to restore the installation of SQL Server 2012 (for management studio only!), And it crashed the installation and still did not fix the problem. Once I generated the delete code and removed the filter, I could connect; I didn’t even have to reboot.

Check for proxies and content filters on your computer and turn them off!

Believe it or not! The error is caused by Apple Itunes messing with winsock on the machine. I often need to reset winsock due to shitty iTunes. You do not need to delete .net or studio, etc.

Open a command prompt under admin priv Type netsh winsock reset reboot
