Coloring specific points on a MATLAB surface

Question

I have a three-dimensional dataset that I intend to analyze. After analyzing a dataset that basically runs an algorithm to find a range of points, I have a certain color for this range of points, so when someone sees a surface graph, they know which points of interest. How can this be achieved?

I tried to find help on the mathworks forums, but so far I can not find a satisfactory solution.

If you use a surface function, you can use the 4-dimensional version of surf(x,y,z,c) , where c allows you to specify a color based on the current color map. See this link on the mathworks website for more details http://www.mathworks.co.uk/help/matlab/ref/surf.html
