Stop displaying the computer

I would like to be able to stop the computer from displaying or temporarily hide this output. I used a VNC application called AnyPlace, which allows the host computer to hide the output on the monitor and stop keyboard input, but I cannot figure out how they did it. Since you can still control the computer from a remote application, I assume that they do not just download the application using a black screen. I thought about this, but I can not guarantee that I will probably be the topmost application. I need to hide the screen while I use the control system to close the application, and open another in the background, and then restore the result.

Some programs use DPMS to force the monitor to switch to power saving mode. Others may use the HUD overlay to draw on top of the screen without actually having a window (they are often used along with volume keys, etc.). On Windows, you can use the "window stations / desktop" GUI APIs to temporarily switch to a whole different desktop.
