IPad Apps Never Installed in Retina Simulator

I'm already puzzling over this, and I'm probably just making a stupid mistake. After upgrading to Xcode 4.5.1 (which may have happened in version 4.5), I just can't load the app into the Retina iPad simulator. I edited the compilation scheme to say always use the Retina display for the iPad. No love. It used to be that you can change simulators on the fly, and everything that was open would be the one for which the project was drawn up. But I can’t figure out how to do this in 4.5. Help!

Well, after a long session "find all my settings files and save them, delete Xcode and all its settings files, reinstall Xcode, restart loading simulators and copies, replace settings files, etc. etc." I ended up in the same position. There is no retina simulator for me.

The problem is not in Xcode or in the project file - the 5.0 simulator simply does not start in Retina mode. The 5.1 and 6.0 simulators work fine, as I discovered when I switched to them in the compilation scheme. Go back to 5.0, and I'm stuck in normal simulator mode. The reason I used the 5.0 simulator was to test iOS features with the lowest common denominator. This is a bug in iOS 6.0 that affects large packet transfers through IPSec, which has not yet been fixed.

So, I still do not know what the missing status of Derived Data is, except that it is fixed, and I assume that reinstalling the application has been fixed.

Something funky is happening, which seems to be acting not as expected. Try these solutions in the following order.

  • Your method is correct, you set the preference for your Simulator Display when editing your circuits. Make sure your destination for the circuit is the iPad simulator that it is attached to the Launch Scheme, and set the display of the iPad Simulator to Retina. Save / apply schema changes, try to run the application. If this does not work, close + open Xcode again, check the schema settings to see if they are stuck, and try again

    How to change simulator display preference

    You can double check if your changes are stuck. Go to the project file (by right-clicking on the project file and selecting "Show Package Contents"). Then go to the next item:

    xcuserdata->username.xcuserdatad->xcschemes->ProjectName.xcscheme

    Open it in your favorite editor and check if there is:

     simulatorIPadDisplay = "2.000000"

    ... for your desired circuit

  • If this did not work, it could be a problem with your derived data (unlikely, but step 1 should have worked). Open the "Organizer" and open the "Projects" tab. Then click "Delete ..." for the received data. Do the same as before; start, close Xcode, check and restart.

    How to delete derived data within Organizer

  • Well, we're really in a pickle, this is the only way to set your preferred simulator for the assembly scheme. You may need to go to uninstall Xcode and reinstall and repeat the previous steps.

  • What's happening?! We have exhausted our methods; you may need to inform Apple about this problem.
