Embedded Database Alternative to MySQL

We're trying to identify an alternative for MySQL. Since acquiring Oracle Sun, this product now requires a commercial license. We currently supply the MySQL server, LIBMYSQL.DLL (C API) and the JDBC driver (JAVA API) with our products.

We need to explore alternatives that do not require commercial licensing. The options we have are:

  • Using an earlier version of pre-Oracle DBMS
  • PostgreSQL or MariaDB may be options
  • Any other options that satisfy our requirements above?

Can you give us your suggestions?

To begin with, how true is it that a commercial license is now required for MySQL? You can see from the Oracle page that next to the ads, they also have an Open Source license with a GPL license.
