MacOS currently has a bug where, after unlocking the smart card in Keychain.app, it will freeze the lock icon in the system settings. You can no longer “push to unlock” a lock to raise it to administrator privileges in the system settings.
Inside, we found that restarting securityd resolves the frozen lock, but with this restart there are a lot of problems for OS X.
Here's what we say about freezing (see red circle):

This is how we stopped and started securityd.
sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.securityd.plist sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.securityd.plist
When this is completed, the lock will again become functional. However, after a reboot, we found the following problems:
- The user can no longer wake up from the splash screen - the username / password dialog will not be displayed for any waking event, moving the keyboard or mouse, leading to a machine that will require a reboot or forced login
- You cannot disconnect any stocks or CD / DVDs - any connected stocks will no longer be deleted due to this security restart.
- Some other minor issues have been reported (which I have not experienced), you can read them here in this Apple community thread:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3248969?start=60&tstart=5
It seems quite possible that Apple would not want to restart securityd, however we found that this is the only solution that works to reset the padlock to its functional state. We tried to restart pcdcd , and this did not help other tricks, instead of restarting securityd .
We are looking for a safe reboot process for securityd .
