How to create overlay information in Android

I am looking for a way to create a short entry of an application attachment for display to first users. These posts gave me some insight into how this can be done, but not completely:

I don’t understand how to properly access my elements, since my root layout element is LinearLayout , which includes an Actionbar and ViewPager instead of the actual elements.

Are there any frameworks that do this for you?

The project documentation explains how to implement it. However, a word of advice: this type of explanation is most often regarded as poor design: if your application is well designed, you do not need to provide a tutorial to the user, it should be intuitive.
