I had the same problem when trying to deploy my application, NetBeans generated this code in my web.xml myself.

in your web.xml completely remove

 <ejb-local-ref> <ejb-ref-name>appName</ejb-ref-name> <ejb-ref-type>Session</ejb-ref-type> <ejb-link>AppName#SomeClass</ejb-link> </ejb-local-ref> 

he should deploy after that.

Remove XML and use portable JNDI names (see, for example, the Wikipedia article on EJB).
