Is it safe to open an alias with xdg-open

I want to configure the alias open=xdg-open , which replaces the regular linux open command, which in itself is a symbolic link to openvt .

I have installed debian wheezy installation with bash shell. Does anyone see a problem if I do this?

Yes it is. Once you use it, it is valid only for your user.

The chill also adds it inside ~/.bashrc , so it will be available only for your user and only for the current shell session (smoothing itself every time you start a new session).

In some distribution, .bashrc downloads a file called .bash_aliases for each session. You can also add your nickname.

alias is just a replacement for the text for the original (e.g. a preprocessor in C).

It is valid only in the current shell where it was created, unless you added it to the .rc or .profile file. As soon as you exit, the alias no longer exists, and therefore I do not understand why this may cause problems.
