Getting a list of windows on an Xvfb server

Question

I am trying to get a list of windows on an Xvfb server on a machine with debian squeeze. What am I doing:

$ Xvfb :2& $ DISPLAY=:2; wmctrl -l 

But I get this error:

 Cannot get client list properties. (_NET_CLIENT_LIST or _WIN_CLIENT_LIST) 

Is this normal or am I missing something?

I had a similar problem. Im my case xfce-panel has not been configured. Finally I did:

 sudo chmod -x /usr/bin/xfce4-panel 

This solved the problem (I do not need this panel). This is a dirty hack. The right approach is to customize the panel.
