How to disable vhdl-mode in emacs?

I am studying emacs at the moment and tried to write a simple vhdl program for testing. I see that vhdl mode can be an interesting feature, but I would like to know how I can turn it off at the moment and how I can reactivate it.

Use the Mx basic-mode command, i.e.:

  • Press (and hold) the meta key (usually the Alt key)
  • Press x

This will move the cursor to the echo area at the bottom of the screen / frame. Enter fundamental mode and press the return key.

To permanently disable VHDL mode, you will need to change the file association with the extension used by emacs to associate the file extension with a specific main mode. You can do this by writing a .emacs configuration file. Look for auto-mode-alist in the emacs manual:

(setq auto-mode-alist (remove (rassoc 'vhdl-mode auto-mode-alist) auto-mode-alist))

Switch to another mode, for example

 Mx fundamental-mode RET

or

 Mx indented-text-mode RET

turn it on again by typing

 Mx vhdl-mode RET
