IPad 2 screen recording

First of all: this question is not directly related to programming. However, the problem exists only for developers, so I'm trying to find the answer here, as there are, possibly, other people in this community who have already solved the problem.

I want to record the iPad 2 screen in order to be able to create demo videos of the application.

Since I use motion data, I cannot use the simulator to create a video and I must use the iPad myself.

I have seen various sites discussing various methods.

Everyone seems to have their own hacker solution to this problem.

My setup is this:

It doesn't matter if the recording should be on a Mac or on a PC.

My questions:

  • Is it possible to programmatically disable the HDCP flag from the application itself?
  • HDMI offers better quality than VGA. Will the first method I listed work with my setup, although I don't have a complete HDCP chain?
  • What about the Intensity Extreme window? Can I use it and then connect to the Thunderbolt mac mini port and record from there?

Is the Thunderbolt mac mini port bidirectional and suitable for capture? Is Mac mini HDCP compliant? If it does not work due to the fact that my screens do not meet the requirements of HDCP, will it work if I run the recording software and then turn off the screens? Will it work if I use iPad 2 on top of VNC as a screen, since it must be compatible with HDCP if it sends HDCP streams?

  • If I need to get back to the VGA solution: will the VGA adapter mirror everything that appears on the iPad 2 screen, or do I need to program a special presentation mode that sends everything to the VGA cable instead of the iPad screen? Will the proposed setting using VGA2USB be qualitatively high, or would you recommend other tools?
  • What about the Apple Composite AV Cable ? Maybe a different approach?

I decided to use Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro with the Apple Digital AV adapter on a machine with an HDCP work circuit.

This approach worked well, capturing is possible in 720p with the iPad screen centered in the captured video. Thus, the capture does not occur in the full native resolution of the iPad screen, and black borders are entered to fill 720p video frames.

I published information about displaying HDMI HDTV output on a monitor without HDCP. Look for my posts. Perhaps this will be useful. Or, how about just using a cell phone to record video on a tablet screen, with the right lighting, low reflection coefficient, etc. It will not be 100%, but it may be enough.
