The difference between GMap2 and google.maps.Map

This may sound a very silly question, but I'm just confused. I am completely new to Google Maps, and I went through two different types of map objects, namely GMap2 and google.maps.Map. What is the difference and which is better?

GMap2 is the previous version of the google maps framework (version 2.x). Google has completely rewritten its javascript library, making it easier and more compatible with mobile devices. This is version 3 .

If you're new, start with version 3 (google.maps.Map)
