How to reference a cell or range in an external spreadsheet?

I have one spreadsheet already saved with some data, then in a new spreadsheet in the same folder on the same hard drive, I am trying to link to a cell in a previously saved spreadsheet file.

From what I read, I have to click " Insert in the top menu, then" Link to External Data , then select the file and cells in the "External Data" dialog box. But after selecting a file, the OK button remains disabled, and the Available Tables / Ranges field remains blank. This happens both in Linux and Windows XP versions.

What am I doing wrong?

If I check the "Update every" box, there will be no difference; I still cannot do anything because the OK button remains disabled.

For data in another table, it is easiest to use external links. You can refer to the data using the "absolute or relative path to the file" # Sheet3.A1: Sheet3.B5 or if you want the project to occupy a large external area in the area with the same formulas for using the size array in combination with external links.

With Libreoffice 3.5, you can even create external links to unsaved files, and the links are adjusted the first time you save the link file.

Then there is, as you correctly mention also the link function. For this function, you need to create a range name in a linked document that refers to the area you want to link. (see http://help.libreoffice.org/Calc/Link_to_External_Data )

The easiest way:
In TargetSpreadsheet, select the cell and type = , then immediately switch to the SourceSpreadsheet and click on the cell from which you want to get data, and press Enter .
