How does this site know my GOOGLE search bar

I recently went to the WROX forum. GOOGLE brought me there. At the top of the page I received this message

Welcome, user. Your Google search for 'bosh iis' brought you to Wrox Forum

Out of curiosity, does anyone know how they could track this?

Thanks!

They can read the HTTP referrer header containing the search string.

Simplification of simplification: someone clicks a link on a Google search results page (which has a search query as part of the URL) to another page. On this page you can read the URL of the previous page (it was a Google search).

Using the same technique, web developers can discover which pages link to their page.

A website can get referrer data from the HTTP header, which means that the page has requested the page you are currently viewing, so the website knows that it was transmitted from Google, and by parsing the URL, which he can recognize your search query.
