In android, I can provide alternative resources for many screen resolutions, such as drawable-hdpi, drawable-ldpi and drawable-mdpi. Will libgdx understand that it works with a certain screen density and uses the appropriate resource for this?

Libgdx does not directly support multi-resolution resources, as Android does. However, Libgdx has some support. The ResolutionFileResolver class allows you to resolve file names with better resolution. However, you are responsible for setting possible permissions and directory names. There is an example of using AssetManagerTest .
