Haml for rails, Use the "haml" gem alone or with "haml-rails"

Question

I am making the switch to Haml for our rails 3.1 application, and I wonder what brings the 'haml-rails' stone to the 'haml-rails' stone in the table, separate from the rail generators?

It says that it preloads the haml process in rails. Does this mean many performance benefits? We mix erb and haml, so it seems not so good to load haml every time.

I use haml-rails primarily so that generators output haml representations instead of erb. Other than that, I don't know any difference.
