Can I develop Android without an Android phone?

I don't have an Android phone, is there another way to find out Android? How can I find out and what do I need?

Yes, absolutely ... The Android-SDK comes with an emulator that, while fancy in some way, does a pretty good job, allowing you to at least start learning and launching most sample projects.

edit: This thread is somewhat old, but recently a new emulator has been released, which is pretty nice. Check out Genymotion :)

Yes, you can learn the devroid developer without a device, although it is really good to have one if you go into dev.

I started 3 months ago and this is what I did

  • Download sdk and tools
  • Created hello world application.
  • Read about the best practices of android sdk on the developers website.
  • I looked at many sample applications to find out how they work.
  • The creation of our application has begun.

You need to fulfill the following requirements

  • Java knowledge
  • Android sdk
  • Android simulator
  • working knowledge of the Android OS (you can get it using an emulator)
  • creativity and logic
  • Finally, a video tutorial (I suggest lynda.com )

Sure. Just get the android emulator and use it for your development. there are free emulators available online, as well as tutorials and many books available for Android OS development.

In addition to the answers above,

u should really test ur device when you create an application that uses one of the following values:

  • GPS or wi-fi to get the user's location

  • when you want to use any phone sensor in ur app

  • when you try to integrate the camera / camcorder into your application.

  • You may also need to actually test the phone / sms functionality built into the application.

otherwise the emulator just works fine
